Women’s Day has slowly started meaning more about consumerism than empowering and embracing feminism. We felt the need to bring back female flower power this women’s day.  On the on-going International Women’s day week we got Jewellery Designer Dolly Oberoi to share her views on the same.

Do you think that with the onslaught of consumerism, Women’s Day has lost its sole objective? Elaborate.

No, I don’t think that with the onslaught of consumerism, Women’s Day has lost its sole objective. Every special, distinct form of consumerism among working women is simply a means of arousing the consciousness of the woman worker and drawing her into the ranks of those fighting for a better future. Let a joyous sense of serving the common class cause and of fighting simultaneously for their own female emancipation inspire women workers to join in the celebration of Women’s Day.

Feminism back then meant acting like a male but it is evolving into balancing a woman’s beauty and brains. Do you believe you are a feminist at heart?

Yes, I believe that I am a feminist at heart.

Rapes, gender discrimination, dowry deaths, eve teasing etc, everywhere women are being subjected to unfair treatment. Have you ever faced unjustified treatment as a woman?

No, I have never faced unjustified treatment as woman. According to me there never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.

What do you think the biggest feminism issue worldwide?

Feminism is the struggle against the patriarchy, the dominance hierarchies that have defined global culture for all of recorded history. For this reason, it has traditionally been–and will probably for long remain–the centre piece of all civil liberties reform. To the extent that women’s rights represent a victory over the old order, they demonstrate that we can move ahead, that we can move forward, and that brute force and tradition can give way to freedom and hope.

One issue you believe must be highlighted this women’s day?

Women Empowerment is an issue highlighted worldwide specially in Asia. Our country needs major law enforcement for the security of women.

One law India desperately needs to be introduced in favour of women?

Rapist should hang to death instead of just few years of custody.

Any message for today’s women?

Be strong and confident.
