Women pay a lot of attention to skin care, hair and makeup but forget to take care of their intimate areas.  Maintaining hygiene in the intimate zone is essential not just to feel cleaner but to avoid unpleasant health problems. Here are some basics you must know to keep your intimate area clean:

No use of soaps:  Never use ordinary soaps or shower gels to clean the vagina as using ordinary soap can disrupt the natural vaginal flora, thereby lead to a multiplication of harmful bacteria. This can result in irritation, itching, pain, odor, abnormal discharge or infection so be very careful while picking an intimate wash. If confused, consult a gynecologist to pick the right product. Best buys: Clean and Dry, Lactacyd, and Oriflame’s intimate wash.

Wash exterior only: It is advisable to wash your vulva, the vaginal lips, and the area around the clitoris only. As the vagina has the ability to clear itself, so it isn’t necessary to wash the insides. Clean it from front to back.

Menstrual hygiene:  During menses change the sanitary pad in every four hours to feel fresh and to avoid multiplying bacteria.  In the case of tampon change it every three hours and avoid using it if you are prone to infection. Also, try not to indulge in any sexual act during menstruation.

Avoid touching: Hands attract a lot of germs so don’t touch the genitals with dirty hands. Secondly, avoid putting anything inside to protect the delicate skin.

Prevent dryness: Use special creams and powders to avoid dryness in the intimate zone.

Use soft cloth:  Always use a very soft towel or tissue paper to wipe it.  Never use gloves as they can cause minor injuries. Also, use your personal towel only and wash it regularly.

Clean it before and after sex: To maintain good intimate hygiene, make sure you clean it with water or gel before and after intercourse to avoid the passing of germs or bacteria.  The same applies to the partner too.

Wear cotton undies: Cotton is soft and allows the skin to breathe, unlike synthetic materials that prevent the circulation of air and increase the humidity.
