Aishwarya Rai Embodies Desi Royalty in Sari and Sindoor at Cannes

Check out Aishwarya Rai’s look from the Cannes Film Festival:

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan once again proved why she’s called the undisputed Queen of Cannes. The actor made a powerful statement on the red carpet this year—not with experimental couture or edgy silhouettes, but by embracing her roots. Dressed in a traditional saree, complete with sindoor and statement jewelry, Aishwarya brought a wave of Indian elegance to the global stage.  An ivory saree, a delicate tissue drape, and a striking ruby necklace framed Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s first look at Cannes this year—but it was the bold streak of red sindoor in her hair that truly stole the spotlight.

The sindoor made a statement on two fronts. Traditionally symbolizing the marital status of a Hindu woman, it also seemed to subtly silence the persistent divorce rumours surrounding Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and her husband Abhishek Bachchan that have been circulating for months.

Several fans flocked to the comment section to shower praise on Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s look, with many calling her “ethereal.” One admirer declared, “Queen of Cannes,” while another wrote, “Aishwarya in a sari is all we needed to see in Cannes.” A third echoed the sentiment, calling her the “synonym of beauty and elegance.” The internet, it seems, was just as dazzled as the red carpet.

Aishwarya’s saree was a true celebration of Indian craftsmanship, featuring handwoven brocade motifs and intricate zari embroidery in real silver. Draped with a sheer, white tissue handwoven dupatta, the ensemble was further elevated by its zardozi border crafted with real gold and silver—a seamless blend of tradition and luxury.

To complete the look, she adorned herself with Manish Malhotra’s signature jewellery, boasting over 500 carats of Mozambique rubies and uncut diamonds, all set in 18k gold. She paired it with bold ruby rings, adding the perfect finishing touch to a look that was both regal and radiant.

Aishwarya, a Cannes veteran, offered fans a nostalgic nod to her iconic Devdas moment. In 2002, she graced the French Riviera in a saree for the premiere of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas—a look that still lives rent-free in the minds of many.

Over the years, Aishwarya’s Cannes appearances have often sparked conversation, whether for her bold fashion choices or experimental silhouettes—sometimes applauded, sometimes critiqued. But this year, it’s not just the outfit doing the talking. It’s the sindoor—a striking, personal symbol that’s sure to stir discussion, both at home and across global headlines.
