Movie Review: Queen

Kangana as Queen
Kangana as Queen

On Women’s Day comes a classic coming of age rom-com with Bollywood masala and tadka, with Kangana Ranaut playing the Delhi ki ladki who goes alone on her honeymoon to London. The movie moves from simple into something so melodramatic.

Rating: 4/5

Cast: Kangana Ranaut, Rajkummar Rao, Lisa Haydon

Director: Vikas Bahl

Story: Rani (Kangana Ranaut) is a young Delhi girl who is the brink of getting married in 3 days. The movie opens with her mehendi ceremony following which her fiance from London Vijay (Rajkumar Rao) calls off the wedding. Heartbroken Rani goes on her pre-booked honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam, ALONE.

Initially she feels out of place and puzzled, but this journey marks Rani’s self discovery and self confidence that years of constant restrained atmosphere eroded.

Music: Amit Trivedi’s unmatchable music is already a superhit. With London Thumkda the quintessential wedding song and O gujariya is a sweet song. Jugni, Kinare and Ranjha are perfect and rustic songs that show the depth and talent of the composers. The best part is that all songs are a as much a part of the story as Kangana and highlight her moods rightly.

Why you should watch Queen: Have you ever watched a film that makes you smile for the whole time, with its sheer humour or simplicity?  Queen is one of that films, Vikas Bahl shows Rani’s gradual transformation from a middle class girl to a crazy self-confident woman. The movie also highlights Kangana’s acting abilities who plays girl whose marriage is called off and the beaten self confidence makes her gullible.

Why you can miss Queen: The storyline is simple. But it has no major flaws. So this is worth one watch.

Special mention: Queen is truly a gem of a film. It is worth a watch this weekend.
