Independence day is here and like every year, we all are set to pay our respects to freedom fighters who fought hard for India’s freedom. While we all know a few facts about the fight for independence but there are so many things we don’t know about our freedom fighters.

They deserve all the respect and acknowledgement so here are some unknown or less popular facts that we should know as Indians. 

  •  Matangini Hazra was an important part of the Quit India Movement and her determination was incredible. She was shot thrice during one of the processions and that did not stop her from continuing to move forward. 
  • Senapati Bapat was the leader of Mulshi Satyagraha and he was the person who hoisted the Indian flag in Pune after our country became independent. 
  • Bhagat Singh was Sikh by birth but he shaved off his beard to avoid being recognised. 
  • Peer Ali Khan was one of the first few rebels in India during the British rule in 1857  and was given capital punishment. 
  • When Bhagat Singh was given the death sentence, no magistrate was willing to oversee the hanging. 
  • Lakshmi Sehgal was a World War II veteran and she was even given the rank of captain. 
  • Subhash Chandra Bose was fascinated by the teachings of Swami Vivekanand. 
  • He was also jailed 11 times in total while trying to free India from British rule.
