Swine flu: Symptoms and precautions

The deadly swine flu has been making a comeback and this year it was active even in January, however it is worsening in Tamil Nadu and nearby areas and has claimed some 7 odd lives already. The virus which worsens in monsoon has claimed many lives in the past few years.

Winters, closed office spaces and central air-conditioning provide the perfect breeding ground for this torrid disease. However, doctors say some measures can prevent you and your loved ones from H1N1 or swine flu.

Here is how to avoid swine flu:

Wash your hands: Wash your hands regularly at small intervals. Also use an antiseptic soap and dry them properly to avoid any bacterial transmission.

Masking it: While the infected must wear masks. But for precaution sake wear one when you are in a crowded area or going to the hospital to visit someone.

Take care: toddlers, school-going children, diabetics, heart patients or oldies require extra care.

Avoid crowded (and closed) places: Try and avoid closed and crowded places as they help the virus breed. Hit the malls on weekdays instead of the crowded weekends.

Seek medical help: Most people who contact H1N1 and die is because of lack of medical attention. Go to the doctor at the slightest hint of fever.

Here are a few symptoms of swine flu you must know and check:

  • Flu like symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat or body ache.
  • Nausea or diarrhoea.
  • Breathlessness occurs in extreme cases.
