Movie review: Khoobsurat

Still from Khoobsurat
Still from Khoobsurat

Welcome to the world of Disney, that at last tries hard to make a desi rom-com and sadly this is not your Cinderella!  Shashanka Ghosh’s remixes the unforgettable 1980 Hrishikesh Mukherjee Rekha starrer into a modern day snazzy rom-com. Check out our review of Khoobsurat here:

Director: Shashanka Ghosh

Cast: Sonam Kapoor, Fawad Khan, Ratna Pathak Shah, Kirron Kher, Aditi Rao Hydari

Story:  A sprawling palace in Rajasthan is run by an iron handed maharani, Nirmala Devi Rathod (Ratna Pathak Shah). She is strict and ver strict at it! Enter the fun loving physiotherapist Mrinalini ‘Mili’ Chakravarty (Sonam Kapoor). She is there to cure the royal patriarch Shekhar Rathod (Aamir Raza Hussain) off the wheelchair. And soon Mili gets more interested in the deadly boring hot looking prince Vikram Singh Rathod (Fawad Khan).

The inevitable clash ensues between Mili and Nirmala Devi, but the story is very different from the Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic.

Music:  The album opens with Engine Ki Seeti which is quite whacky and rehash of the old folk song Anjan Ki Seeti Mein Mharo Man Dole that has now ‘bum’ instead and is super fun. Guest Composer Badshah Khan’s Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai reminds us of Honey Singh and is fun to party on though its not as great as a Honey Singh number. The other songs are average.

Why to watch:  For the fun loving story and the star cast that fits perfectly. From Kirron Kher to Fawad Khan everyone is perfect. Fawad is sure to grab a lot of female following post this move.

Why to miss: If you are expecting it to match the old Khoobsurat.

Special mention:  Fawad (sigh!) Khan, Kirron Kher’s loud Punjabi act, Ratna Pathak Shah’s strict maharani role, and importantly those loght moments which make you happy.
