World Cancer Day: Tobacco is the biggest culprit

Tobacco is an important source of cancer among men and women, it was known all these years. But a new study claims that it is the most important cause of cancer.

Nonetheless the study claims that the chances of cancer can be reduced substantially by working out on fitness, shedding extra flab and also through adequate exposure to the sun.

An earlier research had claimed that cancer can be caused without any particular reason. That report had also talked about the importance of shedding weight and doing some physical exercise. The report had concluded that these steps can actually minimize the threat of cancer.lung cancer

While talking about the study, Vinit Talwar of Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute says, “Tobacco use – smoking and chewing – is the single most important factor for cancer in men. Nearly 60-70 percent of all cancer cases in men are due to tobacco”. World Health Organization (WHO) data suggest that as much as 30 percent cancer deaths are preventable by taking care of important risk factors including tobacco use, alcohol, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and excess body weight.

A CDC report says that “The risk of developing lung cancer is about 23 times higher among men who smoke cigarettes and about 13 times higher among women who smoke cigarettes compared with never smokers…Cigarette smoking increases the risk for many types of cancer, including cancers of the lip, oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, pancreas, larynx (voice box), lung, uterine cervix, urinary bladder, and kidney…Rates of cancers related to cigarette smoking vary widely among members of racial/ethnic groups but are highest among African-American men”.
