Indian women love budgeting and haggling. This habit is so addictive that often we end up saving money on things which we later regret. Being thrifty is a good habit but sometimes it can fire back like in the case of Ruchi Mahajan, “I brought a baby cot from a cheap store in Karol Bagh, I was very happy because it was a steal at that price. But when I got the cot assembled, it was made of inferior quality wood and it splintered within two weeks of use.  I had to get it repaired.”

Here is a list of ten things you must research and spend on:

Mattresses: A good night’s sleep is the most important thing for everyone. Cheap mattresses do not offer the comfort and can lead to host of problems including back pain. Always test mattresses before buying one.

Kitchen appliances: Kitchen appliances can reduce your cooking time substantially. But buying inferior quality goods can make working in the kitchen a hassle. For instance cheap food processors tend to break down quickly and there is always a risk of electrical shock!

Baby gear: China made toxic toys anyone? Doesn’t the thought of cheap plastic with toxic chemicals scare you? Always buy quality toys, bedding and clothes for your children. Remember quality matters, quantity don’t.

Tech gadgets: Gadgets are always difficult to budget, decide and buy. The best way is to buy an established brand (even if it is tad expensive) over cheap ones. In the long run an expensive gadget proves to be a better investment. Besides, always prefer a brand new one to a second hand gadget.

Furniture: Nowadays with all snazzy décor malls making shop in India, furniture no longer means calling over a carpenter. But many of these malls import wooden furniture and contain ‘compressed wood’ which is nothing buy wood chips and hay compressed together and laminated for a glossy look. Buy good quality furniture, even if it means buying one thing at a time

Makeup and beauty: Going to that downgraded parlor for a cheap pedicure can prove very expensive. Many Indian woman prefer going to a cheap parlor to save money but these parlors can often give you grievous infections due to lack of hygiene. Same goes for makeup, cheap makeup might sound nice but in the long run it can give you acne, rashes and scars.

Jewellery: It is easy to buy small trinkets and junk jewelry every now and then. Buy investing in gold jewelry is always a better investment in the long term. Instead of splurging on useless junk buy gold jewelry. Stick to essentials like a small gold chain, earrings or a nice ring.
