Condoms are great for preventing unwanted pregnancies and spread of sexually transmitted diseases, but a new study has found condoms help the vagina too.

The study found that condoms help good bacteria in the vagina flourish. Sexually active women, who used condoms, had larger colonies of beneficial bacteria in their vaginas. The researchers at Beijing Friendship Hospital also found that condoms help the vagina maintain a pH of 4.5 that creates an acidic buffer system.

The study was published online in the PLOS One journal.
