Facemask or Face shields: What is better for kids?

Check out what is a safer choice for kids: face masks or face shields:

Though there are not many instances when children are getting sick after contracting the novel coronavirus, they can still act as silent carriers of the infection. And that is the reason it is important to protect kids. A new study published has pointed out that children can act as super-spreaders of COVID-19 and have a higher viral load in their body.

This makes it more important to keep your kids safe from the novel virus using protective face gears and following sanitizing procedures. While earlier, face masks were used as a top-notch form of protection, but face shields are also in use now.

Asking your kids to use face masks in no less than a task. They not only feel uncomfortable wearing face covers but making sure that your toddler is wearing it correctly is also a struggle. This is the reason why many parents are opting for face shields, especially for their kids. Countries that are reopening their schools are also seeing a lot of kids walk in with face shields.

Now the question comes: which one of these face masks or face shields is better protection for your little ones?

Face masks cover the mouth and the nose in a more effective way, face shield acts as a transparent barrier covering your entire face. Using a face shield can be comparatively easier than a wearing mask, considering that it leaves no room for incorrect use which would make it ineffective.

According to CDC recommendations, “If face shields are used without a mask, they should wrap around the sides of the wearer’s face and extend to below the chin.”

Benefits of using a face shield:

The best part about using face shields is that it prevents a person from touching their face and spread germs, which is a problem with kids, who like to touch their faces more often. Also, they are more comfortable and convenient to use as compared to masks.

The face shield also creates a barrier over the eyes, which can prevent the entry of viruses. They can be easily washed, re-worn, and most importantly can be useful for kids who have special needs or other learning disabilities.

The one-way face mask provides more protection than a face shield is that it prevents direct transmission of respiratory droplets from a sick person to another, or spread of the infection itself. if the face shield doesn’t fit well for any reason, it could make it easier for germs to crawl in.

While no health agency at this point supports the use of just face shields. It is recommended to use both the protective gear, wearing a face mask along with a face shield. It is the most effective way to keep your kid safe. Also, encourage them to practice sanitization and wash their hands frequently. All of these measures can be a great way to keep your child safe.
