Bollywood movies to watch out for in 2014

The year 2013 has been one marvellous year for bollywood movies. We completed 100 years of Indian Cinema in 2013. It will always be recalled for a long list of super hit movies including off-beat and masala films.

While off-beat movies like Special 26, Shahid and The Lunchbox gained a lot of critical appreciation, at the same time movies with a serious, inspiring and different storyline like Madras Café, Bhag Milkha Bhag and Kai Po Che gained both the audience and critics’ positive appraisal. Also, romantic movies with sad endings became a trend with blockbusters like Aashiqui 2, Ram Leela and Ranjhanaa and rom-coms like Nautanki Saala and Chennai Express also did very well.

Films with thrill, action and special effects like Krish 3 and Dhoom 3 became the highest grossing films. Furthermore, light hearted youthful movies like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Shudh Desi Romance as well gained the audiences’ love.

2014 has just begun and it seems like after the release of Dedh Ishqiyaa very high benchmarks have already been set. I am sure all the Bollywood movie lovers are eagerly waiting for some good cinema – entertaining, inspiring, masaledar, romantic and remarkable. So we provide you with a list of the must watch Bollywood movies this year:

A still from Highway
A still from Highway

Highway: The youngest actor in current day Bollywood, Alia Bhatt, is paired with handsome hunk Randeep Hooda. Alia is abducted by some men and as the trailer says “in bondage she found freedom”, which piques my curiosity to watch this film. Also, we look forward to see Alia break that cute Student of the Year image. Not to forget it is an Imtiaz Ali’s directed film, who crated blockbusters like Jab We Met and Rockstar. The movie is scheduled to Release on February 21, 2014.

Two States: This adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel ‘2 Sates’ with its star cast – Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor will be an interesting watch. While it will be wonderful to see Alia playing the role of a South Indian girl, it will also be amazing to see Arjun Kapoor playing Krish Malhotra, the very popular Chetan Bhagat character. Another reason is the naturally expected amount of masala and entertainment this rom-com can offer!

Gunday: Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor’s bromance as the two handsome, young and talented bollywood actors team up with Priyanka Chopra. The trailers look promising. Gunday can be expected to be a superb movie, a complete package of drama, emotions, action, romance, love-triangle, confusion and entertainment.

Total Siyappa: It is an Indo-Pak love story (rom-com) with Pakistani boy Ali Zafar playing the male lead and the Punjabi girl Yami Gautam playing the female lead, written by Neeraj Pandey the award winning writer of A Wednesday and Special 26.

Gulaab Gang: Madhuri Dixit has already started the year 2014 with the movie Dedh Ishqiyaa and won a lot of appreciation for her evergreen adaa and acting skills. The movie Gulaab Gang will be her second in 2014. It also stars another evergreen beauty Juhi Chawala. The major reason to watch this film shall be two – the star cast and its being the much needed woman centric film.

PK: There are three reasons to watch this film –

a. Star cast – Aamir Khan, Shushant Singh Rajput, Anushka Sharma, Sanjay Dutt

b. The director – Rajkumar Hirani

c. It is a political satire

Parineeti Sidharth Hasee Toh Phasee

Hasee Toh Phase: The music of this rom-com has already released and is creating much buzz. The star cast is fresh, young and promising with Siddharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra leading the film. This will be the first big banner romantic genre movie of the year. The trailers are indeed catchy and show potential of a good entertaining film. You must catch this movie on February 7, 2014 in your nearest theatre.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects:  After Bhag Milkha Bhag in 2013 and Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara in 2011 we are certainly expecting a lot from every Farhan Akhtar movie. Farhan has already established himself as a brilliant director and actor and his pairing with another bright star Vidya Balan will surely be a must watch. The movie’s trailers are funny though stereotypical. But the film shall absolutely not be missed. It is set to release on February 28, 2014.

Humshakals: This movie stars Saif Ali Khan, Ram Kapoor and Ritesh Deshmukh and is directed by Sajid Khan. The high point of this movie shall be that all the three actors have a triple role. Sajid khan movies are fun and this can be a triple-triple dose of fun if all goes well. Humshakals has to offer an entirely different set up and is slated for a June 2014 release.

Haider:  We have already seen the Vishal Bhardwaj- Shahid Kapoor magic in Kaminey. Haider is set to release in the latter half of 2014 and stars Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor in lead roles. Haider so comes with a lot of hope and the audience shall be excited for it to hit the theatres.

Happy New Year: Shah Rukh Khan’s much delayed film has finally come out with its first poster. Happy New Year is all set to release in 2014. The SRK- Deepika jodi has already delivered two superhits and this film will be one great package of masala, masti and entertainment. A must watch for all SRK lovers.

Bombay Velvet: Anurag Kashyap read the novel L.A. Quartet nine years back and since then he has been inspired to make a movie based on it. Giving the original story a desi touch with a backdrop of Bombay, he is ready to deliver Bombay Velvet in 2014. All his previous movies have been experimental, unique and quintessential.  The star cast too is fairly attractive, the leads being Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma.

Beyond this list there shall be many other movies like The Villain, Roy, Bewakoofian, Happy Ending, Mai Tera Hero etc that are slated to release in 2014 and have a good star cast, interesting storyline, with new and old directors and actors.

We are sure Bollywood in 2014 will be an entertaining package – tragedy, comedy, romance, drama, action, thriller, suspense and emotions, it is coming with all.  Not to forget there is an expected flow of some thrilling off beat movies too this year as well.
