Indian Govt announces steep hike in traffic penalties

Strict fines will be imposed on people violating traffic rules:

From the past few years, the problem of traffic and road rage has become one of the major issues in our society and, due to this, many people suffer unnecessarily. The major cause behind this is, no strict consequences on violating traffic rules, taking everything for granted.

However, recently under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act 2019, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways have introduced heavy penalties on breaking any rule. 63 new clauses will come in action from 1st September 2019 and, everyone will have to follow it.

The major aim to bring this change is the reduction of road accidents and betterment in safety. The Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has stated that 1.5 lakh people are killed in road accidents every year in India. These new improvisations will make people more aware and serious about breaking any clause.

Check out the new changes below:

  • Earlier the fine for driving without a license was Rs 500 but now, it will be Rs 5000.
  • The penalty for driving despite disqualification has been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 10,000.
  • The fine for traveling without a ticket has been raised from Rs 200 to Rs 500.
  • The people caught while driving rashly or in an over-speed will be charged with the fine between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 for the light motor vehicles, while a medium passenger or goods vehicles will have to pay between Rs 2,000 and Rs 4,000.
  • For the ones who will be caught in drunk driving can be given imprisonment up to 6 months and/or fine up to Rs 10,000 for the first offense and imprisonment up to 2 years and/or fine of Rs 15,000 for the second offense.
  • The minimum qualification to drive a license has been removed.
  • You can go to any licensing authority of any state for getting learners license.
