Chop onions without crying

Onion is an important ingredient for almost all Indian gravies as it enhances the taste and flavour of the food. But cutting onions involves lots of tears and discomfort because of the gas and enzymes present in it. AAW tells you some simple tips to chop the onions tear-free!

  • Chill the onion in the freezer for ten to fifteen minutes before cutting.
  • Try to cut it under running water.
  • On the chopping board pour some drops of vinegar or lemon juice.  You can also dab some salt on the knife.
  • Soak the onions in water before cutting.
  • It is advisable to breathe through your mouth while cutting them.
  • Light a candle and set it near the chopping board before cutting the onion.
  •  Chewing gums helps avoid tears while chopping.
  • Always use a sharp knife for cutting and chopping.
  • If possible wear contact lenses to avoid tears
